Cyberpunkish

The Journey of the Game

Concept: A simple platformer game with multiple levels set in a vibrant cyberpunk world.

Overview

This game is inspired by classic platformers, with a unique twist of a cyberpunk aesthetic. The vibrant colors and neon lights create an engaging atmosphere, while the gameplay focuses on precision and timing. The goal was to create a fun and challenging experience for players of all skill levels. I made it as my first proper project in GameMaker, and for my Intro to Game Development course.


Design & Development

This project was a great opportunity to learn about game design and development. I started with brainstorming ideas and ultimately, the assignment was to make a platformer, so I integrated this Cyberpunk aesthetic into the design (it's one of my favorite design styles)!

The core gameplay mechanics revolve around precise platforming, with players needing to time their jumps and movements carefully to navigate the levels. I chose this approach to emphasize skill and mastery, making the game accessible yet challenging.

Level Design

The level design focuses on creating a flow that guides players through the vibrant cyberpunk world. Each level is crafted with unique challenges and aesthetics, encouraging exploration and experimentation. I aimed to create a sense of progression, with each level introducing new mechanics and visual elements, and then progressing to combine the elements and make each level more difficult.

The visual style draws heavily from cyberpunk aesthetics, featuring neon colors, a futuristic cityscape background, and a 2D aesthetic.

Audio & Polish

This section covers the sound design choices, music selection, playtesting feedback, and the final polish applied to the game.

Sound Design

I implemented this gritty electronic music that complemented the cyberpunk aesthetic, creating an immersive atmosphere.

Playtesting & Iteration

I conducted several playtesting sessions with peers and instructors, gathering valuable feedback on gameplay mechanics, level design, and overall enjoyment. This feedback led to multiple iterations, refining the game to enhance player experience and address any issues. Initially the game was actually far too difficult, but since then, I have made it a little easier.

Reflection

This project was a great opportunity to start learning about game design and development. Ultimately, I was able to put together a game, and given it was my first time using GameMaker and GML, I think it turned out well!
